check belt? sheared key on the transaxle?

 

Thanks for the reply. I will check the key. Belt is fine and tight. It does move a little in forward and reverse but makes a god awful sound.
I did find one out of a landlord with the same 18hp engine. Do you know if that will swap out?

Not too sure if it will swap. It will likely be a K57 vs. K46???? But not too sure about that. Others on here should know that info.

 

You might want to try opening it up before you buy a whole new tranny? Or, at least change the oil. It's cheap and relatively easy to do. It might save your friend some cash.

 

Pull the rear when my friend got home. Drive pulley splines were stripped. He's picking up and new pulley. Hopefully that was it. Why it stripped out, who knows I'm guessing cheaply made, *** thing only has 254 hours on it.

Picked up the new pulley $55.32, installed, tight fit, no noise, operates fine both forward and reverse. He's back mowing again.

Kirk--Quick question. What holds the fan/pulley in place on top of the splined shaft? I hope not just a snap ring like on my Scotts (JD). That surely is a very poor design.

Yup it's a snap ring spring clip and yes it's a very poor design. Also the spline shaft and pulley splines are so shallow I can't see how in wouldn't strip out after years of use. I guess that's what keeps their parts dept busy. Another poor design
